individual Therapy
Individual therapy is one-on-one treatment with a mental health professional. I am able to work with clients starting at 5 years old through adulthood. With younger clients, family involvement is encouraged and sometimes required depending on needs and goals. In therapy sessions, talk therapy techniques as well as play are used in treatment.
Wait, so you’re just going to be playing games with my child?
Incorporating play for younger clients is helpful to provide them with a safe environment where they can use their most natural form of communication, PLAY!
Play has been used to help clients process and open up about their emotions that might not be as easy for them if only talk therapy is used.
If you have additional questions, I encourage you to reach out so I can further explain the benefits of play in therapy.
In-person and remote options
In person and telehealth options are provided. Telehealth appointments are conducted via a HIPAA compliant platform to promote privacy and confidentiality. When you request an appointment we will discuss if that first appointment will be in person or via telehealth and the process for attending a telehealth session.
What To expect when you get started
When you first reach out, I will respond to you via email to set up a short phone call to gather information and talk you through the process.
The first appointment of a therapy session is called an “intake session” and is approximately 50-60 minutes long. That session is used to gather information that will be useful in our work together and to help me get to know you and your needs better. If you are setting up counseling for a child 11 years old and under, please do not bring the child to the intake appointment. Children 12 years old and older are required to attend the intake session.
After an intake session, the next steps will be to create goals of therapy together and begin working towards those goals. Meeting weekly or every other week is recommended to begin making progress on the changes you’d like to see. Questions and feedback are encouraged throughout treatment to make sure your needs are being heard and addressed. I view counseling as a collaborative process and therefore you’ll get out of it what you put in. I’ll be right there with you along the way.
